Planning a rose garden is an important first step and will save you hours of frustration and toil. Roses might be some of the most difficult plants to garden, but the beauty of a well planned rose garden is unmatched. The difficulty in growing roses means your gardening experience and expertise is an important consideration in the planning process.

If you are a relatively inexperienced rose gardener your best bet is to select from the older rose breeds as they are a lot hardier than the newer hybrid species and will be easier to care for. Rose breeds come in a variety of colors and sizes, so another consideration is the amount of space you have available to plant a rose garden.

If your gardening space is limited you might want to opt for some of the miniature rose breeds. If you have a large area available you might want to consider climbing roses as they can cover an entire wall, but the plants need to be planted around six to eight feet apart.

Roses require at least six hours of sunlight per day, and they require adequate ventilation. Planting roses in a wind sheltered sunny spot in a southward facing garden could expose your rose plants to excessive heat and will stress the plants. On the other hand planting your roses under trees or other vegetation won't expose them to enough sunlight and the trees and other vegetation will deplete the soil nutrients rapidly and your roses will suffer.

When planning a rose garden, access to water and drainage is also an important consideration. Roses require the equivalent of at least one inch of rain per week, but they do not fare well in water logged soil.

Finally when planning your rose garden take into consideration the color of the rose blooms and the symmetry of your garden space. Don't mix various color roses haphazardly, rather stick to symmetrical bands of solid color.
